    Joisted Floor Heating Systems

Timber floor systems rely on the conductivity of components fitted within the floor to transfer heat efficiently from the pipe surface to the underside of the floor finish

In order to achieve good results the ufh pipes must transfer their heat evenly and effectively to the floor surface without creating sharp variations in surface temperatures across the floor.

    Aluminium Heat Diffusion plates

Bearing this in mind there are two types of heat diffusion plates which can be installed dependant again on installation preference and specification.

Standard heat diffusion plates (standard spreader plates) are normally formed of aluminium and are circa 1000mm x 390mm and designed to be fitted on top of floor joists and hold pipes at 200mm centres. These are fitted from above open joists.

Fit from below heat diffusion plates (FFB’s) are very similar in application (normally 1000mm x 226mm) but are fitted from below the floor (between the joists) and fixed directly to the sub floor above.

    Thermal Biscuit mix

Underfloor heating pipe work can be fixed to insulation between joists at required pipe centres and covered with a biscuit mix of sand and cement (8:1) around the pipes and between the joists to a level up to the underside of the finished floor. This method provides additional thermal mass to the heating system improving system efficiency.
